An Awakened Heart is Like a Sky that Pours Light

Paper Series

‘An Awakened Heart is Like a Sky that Pours Light' is an interactive series of work that references the esoteric poetry of the 14th century mystic Hafez. The symbolism of light has universal significance, often presented as a metaphor for truth, and - ultimately - the Divine. The work investigates the primal elements of Islamic geometry, showcasing a selection of its infinite tessellations. The series are a reflection of the spiritual world and symbolize the infiniteness of the Divine. Hafez’s verse is intricately designed in square Kufic calligraphy, oscillating between positive and negative (light and dark), through the hand-embroidered colourful bullion wire. This series on paper is created with a 2.5 dimensional elevated printing technology (OCÉ), produced as a facsimile of the original hand embroidery. The specialized layered- printing technique reflects the shimmering nature of the original metallic bullion wire with an application of diamond dust. Through sophisticated interplay of positive and negative - a play of light and dark – the geometric patterns create a juxtaposition of perpetual movement with unbounded stillness.
