Transcending Veils is an immersive installation that examines the interpretations of light, taking us on a journey from the spiritual to the earthly world. Inspired by Al Ghazali’s treatise ‘The Niche of Lights’ 70,000 the seven veils represent the ,)مشكاة الانوار( layers between us and the ultimate source of Light: The Light of Allah. Each veil is hand-embroidered with verses from the Holy Qur’an that reference light A lighting sequence illuminates the veils as they uncover the Qur’anic verses inscribed in square Kufic calligraphy, whilst recitations of the verses are simultaneously heard as whispers throughout the room. The central panel remains lit as it represents the everlasting ultimate source of Light: Nūr Allah. Finally, a projection mapping sequence reveals the seven verses, showcasing the calligraphic geometric designs as they unify and all become one.
